THE AREDS2* BASED FORMULA
MacuHealth Plus+
Based on the AREDS2* study, MacuHealth Plus+ is specifically formulated by eye health experts for patients already diagnosed with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2, referred to as AREDS2*, is a major clinical trial sponsored by the National Eye Institute. The primary purpose of AREDS2* was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Lutein and Zeaxanthin supplementation in reducing the risk of developing advanced AMD.
MacuHealth Plus+ follows the AREDS2* formula with two important improvements:
- We add 10mg of the third critical carotenoid Meso-Zeaxanthin.
- We reduce the level of Zinc from 80mg to 25mg for patient safety. This reduction is compliant with the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance).

To improve upon the original AREDS2* formula, we include the addition of 10mg of Meso-Zeaxanthin (the third and centrally dominant macular carotenoid). This facilitates maximum augmentation of macular pigment and optimization of visual performance in eyes with AMD.
Studies show that supplementing with a combination of all three macular carotenoids (Lutein, Meso-Zeaxanthin and Zeaxanthin) results in increased levels of Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD). Studies also show that the results of supplementing with only 2 carotenoids (Lutein and Zeaxanthin) in comparison to all three will never be optimal.

We reduced the level of Zinc in the original AREDS2* formula from 80mg to 25mg. This reduction of Zinc is compliant with the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance).
Of note, AREDS2* has shown that there was no significant difference in benefits between the AMD group who received 25mg of Zinc compared to the AMD group who received 80mg of Zinc. These AREDS2* findings in combination with RDA compliance further supported our decision to recommend a lower (25mg) Zinc dose for patients with AMD.
