What is meso-zeaxanthin?

Meso-zeaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid and the dominant carotenoid at the epicenter of the macula where vision is sharpest.

Sources of meso-zeaxanthin:

Meso-zeaxanthin has been identified in over 21 species of edible fish (Makoa et al; Comp Biochem Physiol B 1986; 83: 121-124), hen eggs (Rasmussen et all; J. Food Composition and Analysis 2012; 27: 139-1440), and is being investigated for further sources in several laboratories around the world.

The source of meso-zeaxanthin found in MacuHealth®, is entirely botanical and natural, a derivative of the Marigold flower grown in Mexico, Tagetes Erecta and process in a state of the art group with over 50 years expertise in that field.

Safety of meso-zeaxanthin:

MZ has been available in supplement form since the early 1990s with a perfect safety record showing no adverse vents or safety issues arising from its uses. A double blind randomised placebo controlled trial demonstrated that a supplement containing meso-zeaxanthin on human subjects has no harmful effect on liver and renal function, blood serum, lipid profile and indicators of inflammation (Connelly et al., 2011). In Mexico and the United States, MZ has been used for years in chicken feed to give egg yolks more vibrant color.

Importance of meso-zeaxanthin:

Recent studies demonstrate that subjects supplemented with all three carotenoids (L, Z and MZ) showed significant increases in serum concentrations of these carotenoids. Recent studies demonstrate that patients were able to achieve recovery results using a supplementation containing MZ not duplicated supplements lacking MZ (Nolan et al; Exp Eye Res 2012; 101 9-15).

LUTEIN (L) 10 MG (9.9%)

Lutein is a naturally occurring carotenoids. Lutein is synthesized only by plants and like other xanthophylls is found in high quantities in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. In green plants, xanthophylls act to modulate light energy and serve as non-photochemical quenching agents to deal with triplet chlorophyll (an excited form of chlorophyll), which is overproduced at very high light levels, during photosynthesis. Lutein is obtained by animals directly or indirectly, from plants. Lutein is employed by animals as an antioxidant and for blue light absorption. Lutein is found in egg yolks and animal fats. The human retina accumulates.


Zeaxanthin is one of the most common carotenoid alcohols found in nature. Synthesized in plants and some micro-organisms, it is the pigment that gives paprika (made from bell peppers), corn, saffron, wolfberries, and many other plants and microbes their characteristic color.

The name (pronounced zee-uh-zan’-thin) is derived from Zea mays (common yellow maize corn, in which zeaxanthin provides the primary yellow pigment), plus xanthos, the Greek word for “yellow” (see xanthophyll).

Xanthophylls such as zeaxanthin are found in highest quantity in the leaves of most green plants, where they act to modulate light energy and perhaps serve as a non-photochemical quenching agent to deal with triplet chlorophyll (an excited form of chlorophyll), which is overproduced at very high light levels, during photosynthesis.


The sunflower seed is the fruit of the sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Striped sunflower seeds oil is used as a carrier by MacuHealth for all the three carotenoids mentioned above. The oil protects the product from being degraded by oxidation, which decreases the carotenoid content and effectiveness.

VITAMIN E 3.75 IU (0.5%)

This anti-oxidant is used by MacuHealth to slow down oxidation of the raw material thus maintaining the integrity of the product.


These natural ingredients allow MacuHealth to keep its product with the appropriate homogeneity.
